Grant Wood (1891-1942) was an influential American painter known for his role in the Regionalism movement, which highlighted rural life. Born in Anamosa, Iowa, he studied at the University of Iowa and the Stone City Art School. His travels in the 1920s to Europe shaped his artistic style. Wood's most famous painting, "American Gothic" (1930), captures the essence of Midwestern culture. He also taught at the University of Iowa, impacting many young artists. Wood's legacy endures as a reflection of America's heartland.
Intrest and construction:
I was interested in this piece of art cause ive seen it so many times and as soon as we were told to pick a piece the ides to make it functional by making it a box with the couple smaller and out front came to my mind. I love the meaning that lots of people of of the piece, that Wood did a great job representing the old-fashion ways midwesterners tended to have by not modernizing.
Plan:
- wedge - slab rolled - cut 4 rectangles - cut 1 square - score and slip parts together to make box - cut tops into house shape -make two body shapes - make to heads - shape faces - score and slip all together - score and slip on piece - under glaze outfits and faces - fire
Reflection:
I like how this piece turned out even with it not fully being done. If I had spent more time on it I would add way more detail to almost everything, such as the coloring of the house faces and bodies, and would have add way detail to the face structures. though I do like how the shaping of the house box turned out.
